Well I see there that there is a little misconfusion between encapsulation and spoofing :

When you pass through a proxy/router, your IP packet is encapsulated into the router/proxy "address". So tipically you see on the destination that the IP is not from "your computer" but a proxy.
This is quite useful and totally legal. I mean it's like saying that driving on the road is illegal. This is just how things works. If you aren't happy with that...well cut your internet connection because (TCP/)IP works this way. Point nothing to add.

Spoofing is something rather really different, and this one could be considered as a way to eventually perpetrate an illegal action over the internet because you consciously (read on purpose) changed your IP address (source) on the outgoing packets (you need software and a little bit of knowledge even if I suppose there should be some monkey-FAQ out there on the subject) to disguise your originating address.
For exampe when someone does a "traceroute" to you it'll show your actual ip . when spoofed you send him preferably over a shitty network in siberia (hey on that igloo or not...).

Somewhat both methods seems to have the same result "you don't see the originating address" so it could cause a problem into identifying the legitimate owner of the address. BUT
1. spoofing IS NOT illegal. using a spoofed address IS NOT ILLEGAL.
2. doing some cybercrime (depends on wich country you are, in some country saying what you really think is a crime so go figure...) should be considered illegal.
3. using a spoofed ip address to do some "haxoring" is illegal. But let me do a BAD comparison : a spoofed IP is like a gun. You could use it the legal way or the illegal way. A spoofed IP is just a mean; and like every means they are NEUTRAL.

So let's stop this whole thing up; if <insert web site here> doesn't want users to use a proxy he should start :

1. banning all users who connects from a university
2. banning all users who connects from work
3. banning all users who ...

well let's say that it's practally impossible. I mean you can, but it's like doing a webpage in some "really obscure hindu dialect". You're site will be viewable by only a few persons.

They could acheive that by implementing scripts who are going to check if you connect through a proxy BUT you'll need to authorise that and on top scanning without the legal permision of the owner (go figure the sysadmin at your local University) is considered as illegal (at work I have special warning when some punks do a "scanning" of your routers).

Ok people so now let's STOP THIS BULLSHIT AND USE PROXIES AS MUCH AS YOU WANT.

There are more protocols than IP. If your savvy you can entice a hacker to attempt to use FTP, TCP, or other connection-oriented protocols to identify host systems. Also ARP can be used display MAC address of the PC at the other end. Proxies are simply the first step in true stealth web crawling.

I figure it is all against some law somewhere but the way I figure it's like a Vampire, once you welcome them into your home, it's your fault !!!!!
As a "Member" you can do what ever you want until someone calls you on it and kicks you out. So Fuck off UJ, just for that I am heading over to post...maybe tomorrow.
