if she's the moving type take the shuffle, no risk of broking the screen and it's quite small (but it's shuffle mode only).

The Nano is the 2nd newest model. It's tiny enough for a 10 year old to lose it within a week.

1. you use itunes to transfert the tunes to the ipod
2. they are in the box
3. there are limitations due to DRM (digital rights management) but you can using a tool called "Icopulate"
