The moratorium will not only affect me bird.. it will affect us all. Everything you eat, drink, wear, and drive or ride will go up.

They have to get this well stopped first. There is still a worst case scenario that could play out.... However, if that judge didn't over rule the moratorium then the 33 rigs in the gulf would be free to go anywhere else. They work on a pay or leave contract. They cost too much to sit idle. If the government mandated moratorium stayed in effect than they would be free to sign contracts any where... and when they leave they aren't coming back. All that judge did was bide some time to see if we can figure out what went wrong, how to fix it and if its worth drilling in deep water still. If not... then how deep is too deep....

There is one gulf of mexico.One.There is one atlantic ocean that runs up the length of the east coast.One.

I've said 100 times here I'm not against drilling for oil in the ocean.I'm for doing it as safely as possible once we figure out the problem here.Thats sensible, no?You on the other hand have been raving like a lunatic.

Here is what bird hopes happens in the gulf.... - Anhil8tor - 06-28-2010

Sorry for raving. Just trying to point out that while not drilling until we get the well capped is fine... but if the moratorium stays in effect.... all the rigs will leave. Then we become fully dependent on oil from other countries.

I hear you but this is nobodies fault but the oil industry and the previous governments lax regulatory policies. If the oil had stopped gushing I'd maybe sympathize. As it stands we are risking serious long term damage to the ecosystem down there and the whole east coast.Thats higher on the priority list then not buying oil from the mid east.

You are blaming bush? Srsly?

Dude Obama has been in office for 2+ years... it happened under his watch not the previous president. Also, didn't Obama say if that junk shot didn't work that the government would take over? Am I remembering that wrong?

The regulatory policies happened under bush.Sorry its true. That doesnt mean this is all bush's fault but his VP being in the room with CEO's making laws happened. Why doesnt that outrage you?I guess he shares no blame then?

I don't remember Obama saying they would take over. How would they anyway? We've got no technology for this.Kind of a good reason not to do something is if you have no way to fix it if it goes wrong.

Here is what bird hopes happens in the gulf.... - Anhil8tor - 06-28-2010

Yeah I don't remember exactly.

My major problem with Obama's response was the lack of urgency. He should have jumped in both with both feet and got the navy and coast guard involved. I understand he can't cap the well with the lack of technology but he could have helped alot in the cleanup. I'm not a sadist that believes he intentionally wants to harm our coast to move his agenda... I just think he didn't know what to do. Whats the precedent for something unprecedented? What do we do when we have never had a problem like this before?

I think BP declares bankruptcy by September 1st.

Then whats with all this "wimps in the whitehouse" crap?Total bullshit to deflect the blame. There would be no problem if an oil company didnt try to save a few hundred thousand.Obama might have reacted slow but to me the clean up doesnt start until the leak stops.

I'd be surprised if they did.Seems like the government is committed to making them stick it out and be around long term to make them pay.

Here is what bird hopes happens in the gulf.... - Anhil8tor - 06-28-2010

I read "wimps in the whitehouse" in an article about Obama and McChrystal.... Just threw it in.

Sposedly its over a million which isn't relevant seeing how much they would have made on the well. I guess we can call it containment instead of clean up. You'd be correct that you can't clean it up as long as its leaking.

I wonder how forth coming BP is with the government. Obviously at first they lied about almost everything... I wonder how much the government truly knows about the well.

the government has been pretty quiet on whats going on which either means they know very little besides what they've said or theres a real disaster brewing that they still don't have a handle on how to fix and don't want to create panic.I'm sure theres a knowledgeable government official on site monitoring the whole thing so its not like they don't know the situation.

The same uncle I've been getting crazy tea part emails is now sending out shit on how the gulf sea floor is permanently fractured and can't be fixed. If thats true then what?Where talking permanent ecological catastrophe that will never be fixed.

I think we won't hear much until they are sure about whats going on.

Here is what bird hopes happens in the gulf.... - Anhil8tor - 06-28-2010

If they floors are fractured... it will be worst case scenario...

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/06/16/reliefwell/index.html

See the relief wells are drilling as deep as they can below the sea floor and above the reserve to cement it in. Now if the floors are fractured... when they get this blocked off pressure will mount and continue mounting until it ruptures... IF it ruptures.. there is no way to cap it. It would akin to committing suicide cutting along the vein rather than across.

have yall heard how many boats, barges, etc are in the gulf right now either working on the containment or the cleanup? I heard a story last night talking about the hurricane and what effect a major hurricane in the gulf would have. And they listed all the boats and shit that is in the gulf right now cleaning this up. They were going too fast to add them all up, but it was well over 10,000. And I'm not talking about 10,000 fishing boats. I'm talking about 10,000 big ass boats.

They have some big ass barges just tied together end to end to end to end. To make barrier's to keep oil from coming on some shores. Of course, its not foolproof, some oil can get past them, but its blocking most of it and giving the "skimmer" boats time to suck up some of it. I can't even imagine in my wildest dreams how much this must be costing. I want to say there are around 50,000 people in the gulf right now working on this.

Job creation?

LMAO! Maybe this oil leak will end the recession. Seriously though, BP is spending $100 million per DAY right now. I think their total expense on just "cleanup and recovery" is about $2.65 billion.

I also heard they reported today that they have paid out $128 million from the "trust fund" and that went to 41,000 claims. So, on average that is about $3100 per claim. Doesn't seem like much when you start spreading it around.

The first relief well is close....

BP also has developed a new cap that should be able to collect all the oil...

Yeah, did you see the "new cap" they "developed"? Its the same cap as the old one but has 2 hoses to siphon off the oil. How brilliant is that?

Also, one of the relief wells has reached the depth, but now has to turn horizontal and start drilling horizontally. They are still a long way off and mid august is still the target.

They said the accuracy of that horizontal bore has to be ridiculously accurate. What they are trying to hit is the size of a frisbee. And I think they are at like 12,000 feet.

man its hard to even read that.

its almost like this could be the beginning of the end of the world. like some cork has been pulled that man cannot reverse.

Holy fuck.

Some speculate as much as 100,000 psi — far too much for current technology to contain. The shutoff vales and safety measures were built for only 1,000 psi.

Wow

Which leads us back to Mr. Landau's point about the mudlogs and why BP won't release them.

I don't know... Maybe I'm wearing my tinfoil hat too tight this morning... But this stuff seems possible — if it's only a worst case scenario.

What strikes me as odd is the way the leadership of BP and the Obama administration is acting.

BP is running around apologizing to everyone they can find. Obama says give us $20 billion in escrow and $100 million for the people Obama put out of work on the oil rigs due to his six month ban — and BP says, "Sure thing mate, no problem."

And all of this in a 20-minute meeting?

I've been dealing with oil companies for a long time and it just doesn't add up...

Contrast it, for instance, with the Exxon situation in Alaska or the Union Carbide disaster in India.

Exxon fought tooth and nail for its shareholders; it appealed court rulings for 19 years. Union Carbide wasn't settled for 25 years.

BP is rolling over like a simpering dog. Why?

The only reason I can think of is that the company knows — better if not as well as the Obama administration does — that it will get worse.

Much worse.

Also I expected more things about masturbating at petroleumworld.com.

I sure hope these are all troll job stories. Otherwise it seems as if however much oil is under the sea bed of the gulf of mexico is fixing to rise up into the gulf of mexico. and then i guess that creates the world's giantest empty cavern under the sea floor. Which under all the pressure of the weight of the ocean will probably collapse. And no telling what kind of tsunamis and shit that will create when half the water in the gulf is sucked under the ocean floor.

They should make a movie of this before it happens so we can at least watch the end of the world before it happens.
