Slaves weren't treated bad. They cost about as much as a new car does today. It would be like going out and buying a new car and then intentionally trashing it.

Now I know how Obama felt when Al Sharpton wanted to help his campaign.

Flumper Barflusterbutt Wrote:But my question is this. Do you really think that slavery was as cruel and forced on those people as we have been lead to believe? Don't you think that a large majority of the slaves volunteered to come to a new world for jobs and food and shelter, etc. And don't you think that a large majority of the slaves were treated very good and given fair trade for their work?
I'm not jusitfying the concept, because its wrong to do that. I just wonder how much of it has been stereotyped as people chained up and beaten and whipped and families torn apart, etc.
Thoughts?
I won't propose to know whether a majority of slaves were treated good or bad; however, from what I've read, many slaves were treated well enough by their owners that when they were freed, they chose to stay in the South and with their owners rather than go where it was potentially unsafe for them to be.

Wow reading about this. The Slave Trade from Africa to North America was started by the Europeans in like 1508. But at that time they were taking slaves to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The slaves were treated horribly there. It wasn't until much later (obviously the Pilgrims didn't even come to America until 1620) that they started sending slaves to the US. But the US didn't have anything to do with rounding up the slaves or shipping them here, that operation was already in huge operation for other parts of the globe. When the American farmers were in desperate need of labor for the fields, the European slave traders were ready to supply their demand.
And for the slaves coming across the ocean it was a huge bonus to hit a port in America as opposed to Haiti, the Dominican Republic or whereever else the slaves could be sold.
But, holy shit, the death rate on those ships was unfucking imaginable. I find this hard to believe, but they said as many as 1/2 of all slaves boarded on a ship in Africa, died before they reached their destination.
It also says that as soon as the American slave owners could repopulate their slaves by building families of slaves, that the Trans-Atlantic slave operation ended. The slave owners quickly learned that they could take better care of their slaves and solve three problems. They wouldn't have to purchase new slaves (that were expensive, as much as $1000 in those days). They wouldn't be contributing to the horrific conditions of the Europeans that bought and sold the slaves. And third, they would have slaves that were already accustomed to life here and knew what to expect.

All slaves were beaten to the point of death every day.
Indians were also peaceful creatures who didn't even know how to kill until white men taught them.

That was an awesome overreaction. Other than Dumber, I don't think anyone has said that 1) slavery wasn't bad, and 2) slavers weren't treated horribly. Of course they were, but you really can't say that every last slave was treated badly. I think that's what flumber was getting at.

Wow, reading one story of a guy that told about his treatment on a ship coming to America. He said they were packed under the deck like cargo. So close together they could barely move. And the sweat and the sickness, said they couldn't even breathe the air. He said that at one point three men found a way to jump overboard just so they could breath air until they died. He said others would have followed them, but the deck hands spotted the men in the water and sent a smaller boat back after them. Two had drowned, but the third man was brought back to the ship. And he was flogged nearly to death as his punishment for wanting to die instead of be on that boat.
Fucking insane.

And I suppose in order to avoid more overreactions I should add a disclaimer: Saying that some slaves were treated decently does not in any way mean that I condone slavery.

So .0002% of a slave population got a glass of lemonade once and that makes slavery not as bad as we remember it?Do you realize how despicable that sounds? And what for?To make yourself feel less guilty about looking down on black people?I'm pretty sure Flumper is half joking but you two idiots jumped on board like "yea slavery is overblown!".Shut the fuck up.

Careful squirt. You're like a new candidate here. You're views on everything are unknown so that everybody will like you. The more you speak your real mind the more you'll alienate about half of the people and they won't help you gang up on blondie.

Well, I am going to say that (if you separate the treatment they received on the boats by the Europeans, which had nothing to do with us) if you just focus on the slaves treatment once they landed on American soil, that more slaves were treated decent than beaten like mules.
Everyone has to understand, that in the late 1700's and early 1800's, life wasn't hanging out at the mall and downloading new apps. No matter where you lived in America times were tough. Living conditions were not that great. Jobs were scarce and often very very dangerous. Sickness was crazy and the death rate of children was super high. And that was for everyone. Especially the immigrants that were coming over as fast as the boats would bring them.
I'm just saying that the slaves came here and were given a job, given a place to live, given food and somewhat taken care of. I just think the concept that they were all shackled and tortured with whips is a gross exaggeration.

BIRD can only see black or white. No shades in between. If you say you like colored people and then say that Al Sharpton is a nut, then he sees you as hating all of them.

Fuck off, Mr. Overreaction 2010. I never said slavery was overblown. It was despicable. I don't have any guilt - I didn't own slaves. I also never said that slavery wasn't as bad as history recounts. You're trolling for an equal overreaction or just reading ideas and opinions that are just not there. Good job at having a conversation.

I wonder if we will ever see the day that the colored people have to come forward and apologize to the white people for overblowing the crime on humanity that they depicted and being over compensated for it. just something to think about.
