they are seriously hugly. I mean the colors seem to have been applied by a builder there is an evident lack of finesse here.

yeah, uh, let me clarify that these were not the items, nor the seller I got mine from. There are some out there that do amazing reproductions of classics. The example I gave as the link above is crappy work, I will agree. But look up "Birth of Venus" or "Starry Night" and shit like that and you can stumble upon a good repro (beware, there are some extremely poor ones out there too).
